Ethical cleaning products company Bio-D becomes Hull’s first B Corp certified company

Cleaning products company Bio-D is now recognized as one of the most environmentally and socially responsible companies in the country, having achieved B Corp status.

The Hull-based supplier, specializing in ethically sourced and eco-friendly sprays and liquids, is one of 1,000 UK companies to have passed the rigorous accreditation which requires applicants to prove social and environmental performance high and change their legal structures to become accountable to more people beyond shareholders.

Lloyd Atkin, Managing Director of Bio-D, said of the achievement, “I’m incredibly proud of our team for all of their hard work behind the scenes in helping us achieve B Corp certification.

“Bio-D was founded in Hull in 1989, and we made sure we focused on sustainability from the start.

“It’s behind every decision we make – from the suppliers we use to how the factory is fed and the ingredients that go into the products we put on the shelves. For this reason, achieving B Corp was a key target for us and something we strove to secure.

“We first applied in 2019 and it took the team a tremendous amount of time and effort to cross the finish line. It’s been a long journey, but we’re delighted to now be able to say that we are officially certified B Corp.

The B Corp certification recognizes companies that meet high standards of verified performance, accountability and transparency on everything from employee benefits and charitable donations to supply chain practices and input materials.

Bio-D has been evaluated in various parts of its business, including its ingredients, packaging, liability and labor.

Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, the non-profit organization behind the B Corp movement, added: “We are delighted to welcome Bio-D to the B Corp community.

“This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing the way business works and believe that business can truly be a force for good.

“We know Bio-D will be a fantastic addition to the community and continue to drive the conversation forward.”

This announcement follows Bio-D’s success at the National Manufacturing Awards, organized by Make UK, where it was recognized in the Energy and Sustainability category for its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

A two-year strategy was implemented that included a reduction in its plastic use, a reduction in electricity consumption and an 85% reduction in carbon emissions from business travel.

Mr Atkin said: “While we presented our two-year strategy six months ahead of schedule, we will continue to reassess and set new targets to continue our efforts to be as sustainable as possible.”
