Do natural cleaning products really work?
Dr. Vincent Candrawinata is a scientist and an entrepreneur. He says homemade natural cleaning products remove grease and kill germs.
“Vinegar is an acid strong enough to break down grease, remove dirt, grime, and mineral deposits, and because it kills bacteria and germs, it has disinfectant properties,” says Dr. Vincent.
Regarding baking soda, he says, “Baking soda is a soft alkali; this means that it is a mildly abrasive material and can be useful for dissolving impurities, dirt and grease”.
The great thing about both of these cleaning ingredients is that they’re food-grade, which means “in general they’re safe and non-toxic,” he says.
Can homemade cleaning products really kill germs and bacteria?
They may be considered natural, but that doesn’t mean that ingredients like vinegar and baking soda aren’t chemicals.
“Vinegar is acetic acid, CH3COOH,” says Dr. Vincent. “The same way water is chemical, H2O.”
“These materials have surfactant properties that can dissolve dirt, remove grease, and their pH level can kill bacteria and germs.”
“Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and certain essential oils are powerful natural disinfectants. Vinegar also has considerable disinfecting power.”
Steam: the most natural way to kill germs
While vinegar and baking soda are most people’s go-to natural cleaners, Dr. Vincent says steam cleaning your home is “the most natural way to kill germs.”
“Many people choose to use a steam mop instead of cleaning agents to kill germs on the floor,” he says.
“I love using steam. Many steam mops on the market now come with lots of attachments to clean different surfaces, even toilets and bathrooms.”
Do not mix baking soda and vinegar for cleaning
If you’re considering getting into making your own homemade natural cleansers, don’t make this common mistake.
Many people think that because vinegar and baking soda are great cleansers on their own, they can be used together — but Dr. Vincent says, “you shouldn’t mix them.”
“They will become useless as a cleaning agent. The mixture will also produce gas and may cause the container to explode.
“The bubbles produced by the mixture don’t match the effectiveness. All that’s left is basically water and a bit of sodium acetate.
