AirPhysio Cystic Fibrosis Lung Cleansing Device Now Sold Online for US Patients
AirPhysio, a wearable device designed to help clear mucus that builds up in the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis (CF), is now available online in the US through Life Wellness Healthcare.
The Australia-based company said in a press release that the AirPhysio – which it calls an all-natural ‘lung cleanser’ device – is suitable for children and adults with cystic fibrosis.
“Life Wellness Healthcare was created to meet the needs of people who live with respiratory issues every day,” the company said. “We know firsthand what it is like to live in such conditions. It can be difficult, and that’s why we are committed to offering products that meet the needs of the customers we serve.
The device, made in Australia, is now shipping from Life Wellness’ US warehouses, the company says on its website.
“Our goal is to help people breathe again,” Life Wellness said.
Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in a gene called CFTR. Mutations in this gene result in deficiencies or absence of the CFTR protein, which acts as a cell surface gate to regulate the flow of ions and water.
This movement is essential for the production of a watery, slippery mucus that is essential for the functioning of certain organs, such as the lungs. Consequently CFTR mutations, however, thick, sticky mucus builds up, causing breathing difficulties and increasing the risk of infections in the lungs.
AirPhysio uses oscillating positive expiratory pressure, called OPEC, to directly influence this mucus buildup.
According to the company, the OPEC device offers a certain level of resistance when a person exhales into the mouthpiece of the device. This causes a vibration in the airways, which helps loosen and clear mucus from the lungs. A combination of high frequency oscillations, or rapid back-and-forth movements at a steady pace, is used to provide the resistance.
The device is easy to use, Life Wellness says, and patients are recommended to use it up to three times a day as needed, for about five minutes at a time. The company said such use should be enough to help loosen mucus from the airways.
Additionally, regular use of the device is believed to stimulate the body’s natural mucus-clearing process and make it easier for patients to breathe, the company said.
“Research shows that approximately 30,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis, with symptoms including recurring infections in the chest, wheezing cough, and yellowing of the skin around the eyes,” the company says on the website. “Life Wellness Healthcare is offering the AirPhysio as part of a focused effort to improve the lifestyle of clients suffering from the disease.”
According to Life Wellness, patients with other respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), may also benefit from using the AirPhysio device.
